Uis was originally established as a mining town by the South
African steelgiant ISCOR. Tin was mined here until a few years ago
when operation was halted due to the low tincontent. Deflated prices
on the world market made production too costly and the 500 employees
were retrenched. Presently, Uis is a ideal stopover for tourists
to break the long drive to the north. There are service stations,
accomodation and restaurants available for the weary traveller.
